Understanding How Your Emails Make it to the Inbox

“Every day, 14.5 billion spam messages are sent globally, and nobody wants those messages in their inbox. As an email marketer, the thought that your recipients might think your message is spam is even worse. Once you click "send," you're often left wondering whether or not your message ever arrived. In this 35-minute webinar, we’ll show you how to improve your email marketing results by discussing:”  This article and video are from Constant Contact Blogs.

Email Marketing – Coffee News

Coffee News has a very successful local newspaper and wanted to improve their follow up with prospective advertisers.  Through Constant Contact, Your Computer Lady set up 10 AutoResponder emails to send to potential customers promoting Coffee News services and advertising possibilities.  The AutoResponders are set-up to be emailed to potential customers automatically once they have joined the mailing list.  This keeps Coffee News in front of potential customers.

Email Marketing – DesignWorks HC

Your Computer Lady assisted DesignWorks HC creating an email marketing campaign.   Your Computer created a custom template to mirror the look of their web site and trained the staff at DesignWorks HC to use Constant Contact.  This enabled DesignWorks HC to create their own monthly blog recap emails using the email template the Your Computer Lady created for them. Software used: Constant Contact

Email Marketing - First Class Green Cleaning

First Class Green Cleaning needed a way to follow up on past clients.  Your Computer Lady created 6, 12 and 18 month emails to send out on service anniversaries.  This type of email campaign keeps First Class Green Cleaning in the client’s mind as well as attracting them with a coupon at the bottom of the email for new services. The coupons remind the clients that First Class offers many services, not just carpet cleaning. Software used: Constant Contact.

Email Marketing and Your Web Site

Your web site should be the hub of all of your marketing efforts.

First step is to make sure your email template reflects your corporate branding and coordinates with your web site.  Your Computer Lady created a template for MFS Event Technology that draws on elements of the web site to clearly link the monthly newsletter and the web site. Every marketing step you take needs to build on the previous step and prepare for the next step!

Buscaglia Foundation Email Campaign & Focus Changes

A couple of small additions to the Leo Buscaglia Foundation newsletter were made to change the emphasis of the newsletter. The bi-monthly newsletter - which YCL has been creating for 2+ years - has been an education tool to help the readers/donors learn about the organizations the Foundation makes grants to. While this is a worthwhile purpose, the Foundation wanted to accomplish more with the newsletters.

First a section was added to encourage readers to share the newsletter with their friends and family. This is a great way to grow the email list. Most Email Service Providers automatically add a link to each newsletter to let readers forward the message. But YCL adds a link when possible near the top of the newsletter to make it easier to see.

Your Email Service Provider should include a list of Forwards in your traffic reports. PLEASE follow up with every person who forwards your emails. Thank them for taking the extra step. If at all possible, reward them in some way. It can be as simple as a thank you in the next newsletter, a personal call or a small gift.

CAUTION!  You can not pay readers to forward your emails. I know that popped into your head! That is prohibited by the CAN-SPAM Act. But you can reward someone who forwards your messages.

Forwarding can be do in two ways. The preferable method is via your email service and the Forward link in your message. This allows the forward to be tracked. The other method is via your email client such as Outlook. You can always forward a newsletter as you would forward any other email. Forwards via a email client can't be tracked however.

The second change to the Buscaglia newsletter was a clear request for a donation. This follows the thinking of the oldest sales advice "Ask for the order!"  So the Foundation added a section to the newsletter requesting a donation to help assist more organizations. It is definitely a soft sell but the logic does apply that if you never ask, you never receive.  Same goes for all of our businesses!!

Here's a sample of the newsletter. What do you think?

The HouseTalk Show - Weekly Email Message

To increase listener retention, The HouseTalk Show sends a short weekly message each Friday morning promoting the Saturday show. Your Computer Lady coordinates with the host, Warren Raisanen, and the guests. Often the guest wants YCL to write the email message for them. We review their web site and any marketing literature they send us then create a message geared to radio listeners.

Your Computer Lady recommended the addition of the Famous House articles about a year ago. The "just for fun" articles have descriptions and details about houses in the US. Some are owned by famous people. Want to see George Clooney's bedroom? Some were designed by famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright. Some are just unusual like the shoe house in Pennsylvania.  The Famous House articles have helped build reader retention and increase open rates.

It's important to be sure your newsletters offer something to all of your readers. Maybe the day your newsletter lands in their Inbox, they don't have a need for your product  or service. But if you have built a reputation for a worthwhile newsletter, they'll open up the newsletter anyway to see what you're talking about. That habit will serve you well when they are ready to buy.

Dyna-Tech Sales Email Campaign

Dyna-Tech needed to get information out quickly about some great new products. They scheduled 3 emails to spread the news.

Challenges:
  • There are actually 2 divisions within the company. So the email designs needed to be similar but   different.
  • The messages needed to go out in a relatively short period of time. Your Computer Lady used 3 different people to get the job done.

Not a Challenge:
  • Dyna-Tech is in Branchburg, New Jersey. Distance isn't a problem at all thanks to email and YCL's use of an online meeting service.
  • Your Computer Lady has specialists on call for graphic design and for HTML programming for special needs.

Coffee News of Scottsdale Email Marketing

Patrick Lyons, owner of Coffee News of Scottsdale, is a long time YCL client but email marketing is new for him. Pat turned to Your Computer Lady for assistance.

Challenges:
  • The opt in form on the Coffee News web site needed to do double duty. First, the entrant needed  to be added to a group for a specific time frame to allow Coffee News to pick a winner for the $100 cash prize. Second, the entry form has critical marketing info to gather to guide Coffee News on meeting their customers' needs. Third, the same form needed to add the entrant to Pat's email list for future email messages. Your Computer Lady was able to create a form that fit all 3 purposes!
  • Implement the new opt in form without losing entrants in the transition. We were able to do it!
The first Coffee News of Scottsdale email message

“It was my first email message but the response was excellent. I received several phone calls in response including some from interested advertisers! At minimum, I got my name in front of people that I would have missed otherwise.”

Email Marketing Works!

Just received this email from a happy email marketer!

"Pamela, just wanted to share with you that our phone is ringing off the hook and I am getting email inquiries every 5 minutes! Two of them were corporate and six brides!!! ALL in the first hour! Thank God, I am so excited. Thanks for your hard work."

WHAT WE DID AND WHY IT WORKED SO WELL
Julia has great photos of her food and her servers. We used lots of photos in the message then added descriptions of her scrumptious meals.  We used the same basic message for two groups. That doubled the bang for the buck. 1 set of photos. 1 newsletter. 2 email messages. For "Brides" we added two special sections with bridal offerings.  The message was clear. The message was to a specific niche.

PS - There are only 225 contacts on her Corporate email list. You don't have to have a big list to be successful in email marketing.
